Traditional heart-shaped mask (with a domed forehead and mouth forming the lower outline of the mask), called Ngontang. It has a face of great beauty and restrained serenity. Made of acacia wood.
Its typical colours, kaolin white, black and red at the mouth, and its delicate and stylised forms inspired Picasso and other European avant-garde artists who used it as the basis for their artistic revolution.
Until banned by the French colonial authorities, these masks had a judicial function, as they were worn by criminals and those guilty of evil deeds.
The Fang people are known for their carving of masks and sculptures, and are based on the west coast of Africa, between Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, from where the Fang originate.
