A gilded figure handcrafted using the same metalworking techniques that have been practised for centuries by ethnic groups of the Akan family.
Akan ‘gold’ is an alloy of pewter and bronze dipped in a gold solution with no iron or nickel content. It is kept shiny only by rubbing every so often with a dry cloth.
They are from Ghana (ancient Akan people, whose wealth of gold attracted Portuguese sailors in 1482, and became known in Europe as the Gold Coast).
