Description
Spherical mask in the form of a helmet and is sculpted in wood in the shape of rooster.
They inspire totemic and mythological symbolism.
Wan balanga ethnic group, as they are called, wear a crest which extends backwards and forms a very slim shape. They also include several holes drilled around the base which are used to be tied up to the head or to be stringed with fibres and branches in order to hide its user.
The Mossi ethnic group originally comes from the towns Ashanti and Dagomba, in Ghana. They immigrated to Burkina Faso and started to create complex states with powerful armies and focused on the use of cavalry. Mossi established a prosperous and peaceful empire until colonization started. The expansion of Mossi Empire stopped in the 19th Century when intensive colonization by the French started. This ethnic group is currently the biggest one in Burkina Faso.
It includes a stand, tailor-made, of take wood and a base made of iron and screwed on it.
