Description
African carvings and tribal masks are objects created for religious and ceremonial purposes. The objects of a culture, linked to its tradition, bring interest and flavor to any environment.
This wooden ibeji with beads is a figurine for the cult of the twins. Among the Yoruba the birth of twins is an enormously positive fact (and in Nigeria, where most of them are concentrated, they have the highest twin birth rate in the world). If one of the twins were to die, a figurine would be carved, which the mother dresses and cares for as if she were still alive.
The Yoruba ethnic group is, by action of slavery, the one that has left a deeper footprint in the American continent. These Ibeji gave rise to the orisha in the rituals of Afro-Caribbean cultures.
It comes from Nigeria.
